It is often said that when your mental health falls apart, everything else in your life will follow, including employment, relationships, and family ties. Unfortunately, for many individuals, this also leads to a run-in with the criminal justice system. According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, 2 million people with mental illness are booked into jails each year.
Many of these offenders have underlying problems with drug use, homelessness, and domestic violence. Historically their underlying issues were not addressed, and this created a revolving door with the court system. Courts are now advocating for treatment instead of imprisonment.
On today’s show, the Honorable Judge Yolanda Huff will help us understand how to advocate for our selves or loved ones when the criminal justice system and mental health collide.
